Climb to Chiwong Gompa above Phaplu

Walk up from Phaplu through pine and village fields to Chiwong Gompa, a Sherpa monastery founded around 1920 on a cliff overlooking the Solu valley. One of three gompas to stage Mani Rimdu, it is quiet most of the year and very beautiful.

Chiwong Gompa sits on a rocky spur above the valley, its prayer hall and monks' quarters built right to the cliff edge. It was founded around 1919–1923 by a lama who had come from Tibet, and it belongs to the Nyingma tradition shared by Tengboche, Thame and Thubten Chholing. The walk up from Phaplu takes 1.5–2 hours through pine forest, past chortens and small farms.

In the courtyard, the stone floor where the Mani Rimdu dances are held looks out over the whole Solu basin: Phaplu's airstrip, Salleri's rooftops and, on clear days, Numbur's snows to the north. Inside, the prayer hall has old murals and statues of Guru Rinpoche and protector deities. Visitors are welcome; ask the caretaker to open the hall if it is closed.

If you can, time your visit for Chiwong's Mani Rimdu, a 19-day ritual whose public days bring blessings, masked dances and a fire ceremony. It is smaller and more local than Tengboche's, with Sherpa families from across Solu in their best clothes. Dates follow the lunar calendar; check current status before you travel. Leave a donation and dress modestly.

Questions

How do I get to Chiwong Monastery from Phaplu?

Walk about 1.5–2 hours uphill from Phaplu on a trail through pine forest and farmland, or take a jeep part of the way on the rough road and walk the last stretch. Allow about four hours return including time at the gompa. Your guide can arrange a jeep if needed.

When is Mani Rimdu at Chiwong?

Chiwong stages its own Mani Rimdu, usually in the autumn or early winter, on dates set by the Tibetan lunar calendar that differ from Tengboche's. The festival lasts 19 days, ending with public days of blessing, masked dances and a fire ceremony. Dates are announced locally; check current status before you travel.

Is Chiwong Gompa worth visiting outside festival time?

Yes. It is quiet, rarely visited and set on a spectacular cliff above the Solu valley, with old murals and views to Numbur. The walk up is a pleasant half-day from Phaplu. Visit in the morning for clear views and monks' prayers, and leave a donation for the monastery.
