Cross the Kongma La to Lobuche
The highest of the Three Passes, the Kongma La at about 5,535 m, links Chhukung with Lobuche in one long, high day over rock, lakes and the Khumbu glacier. For fit, well-acclimatised trekkers with a guide.

The Three Passes trek links the Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La in a loop through the high Khumbu, and the Kongma La is the highest of them, at about 5,535 m. Most people cross it from Chhukung to Lobuche. The day starts in the dark, climbing steeply from the Imja valley over rocky slopes and past small frozen lakes below the pass.
The top is a narrow notch of stone, cairns and prayer flags, with a view back to Makalu and Island Peak and forward over the Khumbu glacier to Pumori and the peaks around Everest Base Camp. The descent is steep and loose, then comes the hardest part for many: a crossing of the rubble-covered Khumbu glacier, rough and tiring, before the trail reaches Lobuche at about 4,940 m.
This is a serious day of 8–10 hours. Attempt it only after full acclimatisation, ideally after climbing Chhukung Ri, in clear weather and with a guide who knows the route. Snow or ice can make the pass dangerous; microspikes help. Carry plenty of water, food and warm layers. If weather or health is doubtful, walk round via Dingboche instead.

Questions
How high is the Kongma La?
The Kongma La is about 5,535 m, the highest of the Three Passes, the others being the Cho La at about 5,420 m and the Renjo La at about 5,360 m. It links the Imja valley at Chhukung with the Khumbu valley at Lobuche. Crossing it takes 8–10 hours.
Is the Kongma La dangerous?
It is demanding rather than technical, but altitude, length, loose rock and possible snow or ice make it serious. The Khumbu glacier crossing on the Lobuche side is rough. Go only when well acclimatised, in good weather, with an experienced guide. If in doubt, take the longer, safer route via Dingboche.
Do I need to cross the Kongma La to reach Everest Base Camp?
No. The standard route goes from Dingboche to Lobuche via Dughla without any high pass. The Kongma La is an option for experienced trekkers doing the Three Passes or wanting a more adventurous route from Chhukung. It saves going back down to Dingboche but is much harder.
