Vivaha Panchami
विवाह पञ्चमी
Vivaha Panchami celebrates the wedding of Rama and Sita, believed to have taken place in Janakpur. Pilgrims arrive from India with a wedding procession, and the city re-enacts the ceremony at the Janaki Mandir and Vivah Mandap over several days of music, prayer and crowds.
Vivaha Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright half of the month of Mangsir, usually in late November or early December. It marks the wedding of Rama and Sita described in the Ramayana, which Hindus believe took place in Janakpur, King Janaka's capital. For Janakpur it is the biggest event of the year.
In the days before the festival, a ceremonial wedding procession, the Ram baraat, arrives with pilgrims, many from Ayodhya in India, Rama's city. Janakpur receives it as the bride's family would, with music, flowers and feasting. The Janaki Mandir and the Vivah Mandap are decorated with lights, and devotional singing goes on late into the night.
On the day itself, priests perform the wedding rituals for the images of Rama and Sita at the Vivah Mandap, following Maithil wedding customs. Pilgrims crowd the temple courtyard and streets, many dressed as for a family wedding. It is joyful, loud and very crowded, and a rare chance to see Maithil wedding traditions performed on a city-wide scale.
Tips
- Book Janakpur hotels well ahead; rooms fill with pilgrims from Nepal and India.
- Visit the Janaki Mandir early in the morning during the festival week, before crowds peak.
- Keep valuables secure and agree a meeting point with your group in the crowds.
- Ask your guide to explain the Maithil wedding rituals as they happen.

Why is Vivaha Panchami celebrated in Janakpur?
Hindus believe Janakpur was the capital of King Janaka, Sita's father, and the place where Rama married Sita after breaking Shiva's bow. Vivaha Panchami marks the anniversary of that wedding, so Janakpur and the Vivah Mandap are its natural centre.
