Pathibhara Pilgrimage Seasons

Pilgrims climb to Pathibhara Devi, the hilltop goddess shrine at 3,794 m above Taplejung, all year round, but numbers peak around the two Navaratri seasons: Bada Dashain in autumn and Chaite Dashain in spring. Thousands of devotees from Nepal and India make the climb, many fulfilling vows.

Pathibhara Devi, known in Limbu as Mukkumlung, is one of the most important goddess shrines in eastern Nepal. Pilgrims believe that a sincere visit brings wishes to fulfilment, and many come to make a vow, a bhakal, and return later to repay it with an offering.

The busiest times are the nine nights of Navaratri that lead up to Dashain in late September or October, and Chaite Dashain in March or April, both seasons devoted to the goddess Durga. In these weeks the road head below the hill, the trail and the summit are crowded, queues at the shrine can last hours, and lodges in Phungling and near the trail fill up. Many pilgrims come from Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari in the plains, and from Sikkim, Darjeeling and further into India.

Outside these peaks, October and November remain popular for the clear weather and mountain views, and spring brings rhododendrons. Winter snow can make the climb hard, and the monsoon brings rain and cloud.

Tips

  • If you want the atmosphere, go during Navaratri; if you want calm, go a few weeks before or after.
  • Book lodges in Phungling and near the trailhead well ahead for Dashain and Chaite Dashain.
  • Start the climb before dawn to beat both the queues and the late-morning cloud.

Questions

When is Pathibhara busiest?

Pathibhara is busiest during Navaratri before Dashain, usually late September or October, and Chaite Dashain in March or April. Public holidays and Saturdays in spring and autumn are busy too. Dates move each year with the lunar calendar; check current dates before you travel.

Is it worth visiting Pathibhara during Dashain?

Yes, if you want to see the pilgrimage at its most intense, with crowds of devotees, bells and offerings. Be ready for long queues, full lodges and higher prices. For a quieter visit with the same weather, go in November.

Can I visit Pathibhara in winter?

Pilgrims do visit in winter, but December to February brings cold and possible snow on the upper trail, which can make the climb slippery or close it for days. Go with a guide, bring proper winter gear and check current status before you travel.

How long does a Pathibhara pilgrimage take from the plains?

From Jhapa or Biratnagar, most pilgrims take three to four days: a long drive to Phungling, a night near the trailhead, the climb and descent, and the drive back. From Kathmandu, add a flight to Bhadrapur or Biratnagar.
