Dumji

Dumji is a Sherpa village festival that marks the birth of Guru Rinpoche, held in Namche and other Khumbu and Solu villages in the early monsoon. Sponsoring households feed the whole village for several days of rituals, masked dances and feasting.

Where Mani Rimdu belongs to the monasteries, Dumji belongs to the village. It honours the birth of Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava, the teacher who in Sherpa belief brought Buddhism over the Himalaya and blessed Khumbu as a hidden, sacred valley. It falls in the fifth Tibetan month, usually June or July, when the potatoes are in and the trekking season has ended, so it is a festival held by Sherpas for Sherpas.

The heart of Dumji is obligation. Each year a few households take their turn as sponsors, and for them it is a large expense: they provide food and chhang for everyone over several days, and the honour is real. Village lamas, many of them married householders rather than celibate monks, perform rituals in the village gompa, followed by masked dances. In Namche the dances take place in the courtyard of the village gompa.

For travellers, Dumji is a monsoon event. Flights to Lukla are unreliable in June and July, trails below Namche are wet and leech-prone, and clouds hide the peaks. Those who come anyway see Khumbu without the crowds, at home with itself. Dates differ from village to village and are set locally, so check current status before you travel and ask your guide to confirm which village is celebrating.

Tips

  • Allow two or three spare days in Kathmandu either side, because monsoon flights to Lukla are often cancelled
  • Carry a small gift or donation for the sponsoring household if you are invited to eat
  • Ask before photographing ritual dances inside the gompa; outside, keep a respectful distance

Questions

When is Dumji celebrated in Namche Bazaar?

Dumji usually falls in June or July, in the fifth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, marking the birth of Guru Rinpoche. Each village sets its own dates, so Namche's may not match those of neighbouring villages. Because it lands in the monsoon, flights and weather are unreliable. Check current status before you travel and build in spare days.

Is Dumji worth planning a trip around?

For travellers interested in Sherpa village life, yes, with the right expectations. You will see a community festival, not a show: rituals, dances and long communal meals funded by sponsoring families. The trade-off is monsoon weather, cloudy peaks and flight delays. We suggest it for repeat visitors who already know Khumbu and want to see it at home, not for a first Everest trek.

What happens during Dumji?

Over several days, village lamas perform rituals in the gompa, masked dances follow, and the sponsoring households serve food and chhang to the whole community. The sponsoring households rotate each year, and hosting is both a heavy expense and a real honour. It is as much about feeding neighbours and settling community bonds as about ritual.

Which villages celebrate Dumji?

Dumji is held in several Sherpa villages of Khumbu and Solu, Namche among them, each with its own village gompa and dates. Your guide's family network is the best way to find out which village is celebrating during your stay. Because it is a local event rather than a tourist one, dates are rarely published far ahead. Check current status before you travel.
